Whatcha’ Eatin’? – Stonewall’s Jerquee

There are foods that I miss as a vegan. One of them is beef jerky. Because I miss this food, I keep my eyes open for plant-based alternatives. The brand “Stonewall’s Jerquee” is one that I’ve seen before, and finally decided to take a shot at.

I tried the teriyaki “beef” flavor, and found it to be good, but not great.

Primarily a soy product, the jerquee was good, but had a ‘wheaty’ flavor that I found somewhat disconcerting. I didn’t actively dislike it, but the flavor was off just a tiny bit too much.

The texture, on the otherhand, was almost perfect. Meaty, with a grain very similar to beef jerky, Stonewall’s Jerquee was similar enough to make me really quite happy.

Happy enough to be willing to try a different flavor. I can’t really recommend the teriyaki flavor, but one that has more of a bite, like a peppered “beef” might either nit have the aftertaste, or mask it if it needs to be masked.

I’ll definitely try one of the others, but also, at $2.19 per smallish bag, I wont buy them too often.

I do miss beef jerky, sometimes. . . What foods do you miss, and what alternatives have you found for things?

  1. I’ve tried the pepperoni flavor and I really liked it. I would suggest you give that flavor a try next time.

    • The store that I bought these at doesn’t have the pepperoni flavor, but the next time I’m at Whole Foods, I’ll take a look. Thanks for the tip!
