Whatcha’ Eatin’? – Primal Strips

Now that school is starting again, I’m still in the market for a meat-free jerky, and I came across Primal Strips, hickory smoke flavor.

I’ve had Primal Strips before, and their different flavors are really appealing, but I was in the mood for something traditional, so I grabbed the hickory style.

The texture was a little disappointing. I thought it would be meatier, but as it turns out, it was more of a stereotypical soy-meat texture.

It tasted pretty good, but I think a lot of that is because of the oil it was packed in. The strips were a little oily to the touch, and they left a film on my tongue after I ate them. That may be related to just the hickory smoke flavor, I honestly can’t remember if I had this complaint with any of their other flavors that I’ve had, but if it isn’t related to the flavor, then I don”t know if I like these any better than the Stonewall’s Jurquee I had last time I tried vegan jerky.

Do you have preferences when it comes to vegan jerky?

  1. Jody, thanks for giving this a go. I’ve had their teriyaki flavor and I pretty much felt the same way. It was just so so flavored stick of meat flavor. I’ve never found a vegan jerky that I cared for. I wonder if you took and marinated jak fruit or soy curls and then dehydrated them how that would work. Now I’m wanting to give that a try.
