Beer Wednesday – Renaissance Stonecutter Scotch Ale
Happy Beer Wednesday!
I have a confession to make. This vegan beer post was originally meant to go live last Wednesday, but, like a crazy person, I forgot to change it from a draft to a scheduled post. I throw myself on your tender mercies. Please don’t take away my beer.
This past week I, like so many before me, was taken in by a label. The Renaissance Stonecutter Scotch Ale is a beautiful bottle filed with vegan beer, and I couldn’t help myself.
Renaissance’s Stonecutter is a very good example of the Scotch ale style, very malty, very rich, but I thought it had a bit too much caramel, almost a burnt caramel, and barely enough (or any) hops.
You know I love hops in my beers.
The mouthfeel was right, with light carbonation and a smooth richness, but I just couldn’t get past the almost burnt flavor of the malt, which disappointed me, but not as much as some others.
Overall, I’d call this beer good, not great. I had a hard time deciding just how good it was, on my six-pack scale, but at the end, I thought this particular vegan beer earned a 4/6, because while I know it’s a solid representation of the style, I just didn’t love it.
