Beer Wednesday – Southern Tier Live Pale Ale
Happy Beer Wednesday!
This week I’m happy to have come across ask IPA by Southern Tier, their Live IPA.
“What,” you ask, “does ‘live’, mean when it comes to beer?” Great question, and I’m glad you asked. According to Southern Tier, this beer is “live” because of the fact that its a bottle conditioned ale, so there is still yeast in the beer when it is bottled, and, by extension, when it is poured.
The flavor was rich and floral, with very little bitter hops. The hops was a tasty citrus, but it finished with a slight aftertaste. That aftertaste made the finish just a tiny bit unpleasant, and so that knocked it down in my esteem more than a little bit.
With just a 5.5% ABV, this beer may have been bulked up with a bit more alcohol, or with a little more hops. Regardless, it was still pretty tasty, and would make a very nice session ale.
Maybe because of the finish, I’m happy to give this still living beer a 4/6 on my six-pack scale. If you have better luck with it, though, please let me know what I did wrong!
